Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., is the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and was formerly the director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. von Eschenbach was President-elect of the American Cancer Society at the time of his appointment to NCI. A nationally recognized urologic surgeon and oncologist, Dr. von Eschenbach previously served as executive vice president and chief academic officer of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and held the Roy M. and Phyllis Gough Huffington Clinical Research Distinguished Chair in Urologic Oncology. Himself a cancer survivor, Dr. von Eschenbach’s contributions to scientific literature include more than 200 articles, books, and book chapters. Many influential organizations have recognized his leadership and accomplishments, including the American Medical Writers Association, the American Urological Association, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the American Radium Society, and “The Best Doctors in America” publication. In 2006, Time Magazine chose Dr. von Eschenbach as one of the 100 most influential people to shape the world.

A native of Philadelphia, Dr. von Eschenbach earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. After completing his residency in urologic surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, he was an instructor in urology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He also served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps.
